The World Class Bartender of the Year national final is nearly upon us. This year, the final comes to Melbourne, when the Top 8 gets together to compete for the title of World Class Australian Bartender of the Year at Maison Bâtard on Monday 29 June.

But before the big finale, they’re putting on a day of talks and inspiration with international talent you won’t want to miss.

World Class Community Day is taking place on Sunday 28 June — that’s this coming Sunday — at Chin Chin in the Melbourne CBD. On hand are three top tier bartenders who will share some invaluable insights from their storied careers.

The much-awarded and highly regarded Remy Savage (A Bar With Shapes For A Name, London; Bar Nouveau, Paris) will be in town to talk about his unique and art-driven approach to creativity and cocktails. Having seen Remy speak before, this is one to which you’ll want to bring a pen and notepad — his creative approach is unlike any other bar world figure. He’ll be talking about how a focus on intentional drink design, artistic inspiration, and the guest experience can help you be a better bartender.

You’ll also have Orlando Marzo, the Melbourne-based bartender who took on the world and won, talking about the speed round challenges and the strategies, techniques, and preparation that saw him win the global final and be awarded the title of 2018 World Class Bartender of the Year.

2025’s Australian World Class Bartender of the Year, James Irvine, will also be on hand to discuss with Marzo and Savage the current global bartending culture, and unpack what Australian bartenders can take away from the lessons of the world’s very best bars.

“Australian hospitality is home to some of the most passionate, creative and generous people in the world,” says Kate McGraw, Diageo’s Head of Advocacy. “Ahead of the World Class National Finals, we’re thrilled to host World Class Community Day in Melbourne, providing a platform for our industry to learn from global leaders, connect with peers and celebrate the craft that unites us. It’s a reminder that while only one bartender can be crowned champion, the entire industry moves forward when we invest in each other.”

Spots at the talks are limited, however — register ASAP by RSVPing to worldclass@sweetandchilli.com.au.

It promises to a special day of education and inspiration, and a chance to connect with likeminded hospitality folks keen to grow their careers, and in the process, make our bar and restaurant scene even better.

We’ll see you there.
