Black Box at Dean & Nancy on 22 is named for a box that isn’t black

Black Box

This one’s named for a box that isn’t actually black.

“Inspired by David Warren, the Australian inventor of the aircraft flight recorder commonly known as the ‘black box’, this cocktail honours quiet brilliance and the pursuit of safety in the skies,” says the drink’s creator, Giovanni Singh. “Though called black, the device is famously painted bright orange for visibility, a striking contrast that informs every detail of this serve.”

“Built on The Dalmore 12 Year Old single malt infused with toasted Australian macadamia, the base delivers a long, creamy finish layered with warmth and depth. Mandarin oleo saccharum draws brightness from citrus skin, while blackberry juice lends a deep, inky hue and vibrant fruit character.”

“Served in a sharp, rectangular glass to evoke the recorder itself, the drink’s dark body is set against a dusting of dehydrated mandarin powder along one side — a vivid orange contrast referencing the true colour of the ‘black box.’”
