When Australian Cocktail Month kicks off on May 1st, we know which drink we’re reaching for first: this Heads Up cocktail at Melbourne’s Black Pearl.

Created by Ben Hardy at the Fitzroy institution (the Black Pearl is 19 years young, just saying) the Heads Up is everything that is great about drinking cocktails in this country.

Why? There’s serious flavour here — punch from the rum, a light, good-times feel from the drink’s coconut elements — and it’s stirred down and served up with some top notch hospitality from some of Australia’s best bartenders. What else do you want?

Heads Up


  • 50ml Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva
  • 10ml dry vermouth
  • 10ml sweet vermouth
  • 10ml coconut water shrub


  1. Stir down all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
